I want to make it so that the intake is horizontal and lowered, say to 3 or 4" above the gravel..Or I want to make it so that the intake is lowered a bit to the same height above the substrate. Is this possible? What kind of pipe fittings or whatever would I need to use? Is PVC a good idea? I know it's OK to use for fish tanks... Will the motor be able to suck up water, now that I plan on extending the intake tube?

I had a look at your filter on the net, it has a round intake tube, right. What diameter is it? Does the little strainer come off? Can you get Eheim spares overthere? I reckon that if you get some Eheim Rigid tubing the same dia. as your tube, and cut it with a small hacksaw to the depth you require (with your original strainer attached). Then with about 2 inches of Eheim Flexi tubing slot the two together. Attach to the aquarium glass with two of the correct size pipe clips with suckers (again from Eheim), and there you go. (A nice clean job) I hope this is what you wanted to do!. If you need pictures of the Eheim filter parts do an internet search. And if you cannot get the parts overthere, then some other aquarium filter manufacturer will have something similar I'm sure.
Hope this is of some use to you...
P.S. The Rigid tubing comes in metre lengths & you can buy the Flexi tubing also by the metre.

Yes It will pump if you extend the tube I would get like a tee to match the intake glue it on there and put pvc on the sides and extend it out a little bit or you can do the same with a 90 degree.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Now that I know what to do, I will keep you all updated, once I get around to modifing the intake tube.
