i have an Oceanic 29 Biocube tank just running eith some live rock. I was wondering if i could put a peacock mantis shrimp in there. i've read about their power and abilities, but still wasn't sure if they would crack the biocube. any opinions?
While you may be correct in saying they CAN, truck, they rarely do. Mantis related injuries really only happen when the owner gets lazy or forgetful, if you respect the srimp, you'll be fine. And as for the tank smashing, this too is rare. IF it happens, it's almost always the case that the shrimp is digging a burrow under the rock in the sand bed, reaches the bottom, and tries to break it open. This can easily be protected against by laying a few sheets of sacrificial acrylic down on the inside bottom of the tank before you add anything. This way if the shrimp does dig down, hits the sacrificial acrylic, and wants to try and dig deeper, all it cracks are the dummy pieces of acrylic. It may split the acrylic, but it won't be strong enough to actually dig a hole in it. Eventually it will tire and deal with the false bottom being there. Simple problem, simple solution
Oh and yes, that size tank would be ok for a peacock mantis
