About two weeks ago my peacock gudgeons spawned and after reading a bunch of information about how the male gudgeon will always eat the newly hatched fry I thought it would be best if I took out the eggs and hatched them myself. A few days after taking the eggs out they hatched. I've been feeding them BBS and they have been doing real well. I thought there was about 12 but there seems to be about 8-10. It's very hard to count them!
After I took the eggs away from the male he immediately started courting the female again and within a few days they spawned again inside of a PVC pipe. I watched for days the eggs developing inside the pipe but I didn't feel like taking the eggs away from the male and hatching them myself. I thought for sure that the male would eat them as soon as they hatched and I would never see them.
About 45 minutes ago I went to do a water change and right there next to the males head I counted 5 fry swimming about So much for this terror of a dad trying to eat them..he was just sitting next to them!! Since there is a bunch of wood, java moss and other plants I figured the chances of them surviving was pretty high but still I ended up getting a small piece of syphon tubing and syphoning out 8 of them!!
I have seen more but I had a heck of a time just catching the 8 so I'm just going to leave them in the main tank. I've put a piece of nylon stocking over the filter in-flow so they have a good chance of making ít now.
After putting the 8 new guys in with the 8-10 week to week and a half old guys I could see a big difference in size. I didn't think the older ones had grown much but boy they have! So now I have about 16-18 peacock gudgeon fry that I am raising.
