I know both fish are basically peaceful, but given that they both inhabit the lower areas of the tank, would they be likely to clash in a 50g planted tank, with lots of hiding places?

Also, would Angels look at the gobies and think - "Yum - snack-time" ? (I'm *thinking* the gobies would be too big - but would I be wise to look for adult specimens, maybe?)

I don't have any of these fish at the moment, but am planning ahead and just considering along the lines of "If I want X does that mean that I shouldn't do Y" :)

Thanks for any thoughts

Cichlids and gobies of similar size should be fine, at least provided the cichlids aren't spawning. Basically make sure they don't have to compete for real estate or nesting sites. In a 50 gallon tank you should be fine.

Angels can and will eat anything they can swallow. If the gobies are neon tetra sized or smaller, and the angels are adults, then yes, there's a risk. That said, angels tend not to forage on the substrate, but even so, that's no guarantee they won't, especially if you go on a vacation for a week and leave them without food.

Cheers, Neale

It should work. Both the cichlids and gobies hold terratorise so enshure there are some very different teratories for all the males that you have. The gobies will do best with caves.
As for the angesls, get the largest gobies you can buy. Also, how big are your angels? Small angels that grow up with small fish may not eat them when older, maby because they dont realise that they have grown bigger.

I don't actually have any angels yet (collecting new [empty] tank on Sunday :hyper: )

It sounds like I should get the biggest gobies I can find, and the smallest angels ( within reason  )

Thank you both very much for your replies.

One further question - I have read various opinions as to whether the gobies should be in pairs or a group ( of pairs? a harem?) Does anybody have any advice on this? As none of my stock actually exists ( other than in my head) it is all open to any adjustments necessary

I would keep them in a hareem and not actually have any thomasi. I would have three males and six females so they can all have a good teratory.

I wouldn't trust the angels with peacocks .

get a group of peacocks , at least 6 more if you can swing the price .

those Thomasi can be a handful as well . They are going to be larger than the gobies , not much in length , but they have broader/deeper bodies .........All in all about 3 times the size , I've kept both , still have peacocks .

In a tank that size you should be ok .

My Peacocks share a 75 gallon tank with nannacara anomala , apistos [ cacs very plain looking ] , cherry barbs , neons , glolite tetras , Harlequin rasbora , red pencil fish ....and some otos

My favorite fish to keep with peacocks are Badis badis badis A.K.A Blue Badis , of which I am currently down to one pair , so they are on their own in a smaller tank in hope that they will breed for me .

there is a good amount of information on this site about care , social behavior and breeding of peacock gudgeons , also a profile ...........Search this Forum
