Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions about peacock Eels? My husband bought one and put it in the tank and I would like to know a little more about it. Mostly, he seems rather useless as I've seen it four times over the last month I've had him (or Her).

from the looks of it, neither yourself or your husband researches on the fishes you want to keep.

peacock eels grow up to 10 inches. it an interesting bottom dweller that likes to hide during the day. they will bury into the gravel with just their head sticking out. could be kept with fish of similar size. you have to provide hiding spots and keep the tank well covered. more active at night.

i'm quite offend when you say he/she is useless. you have to respect the fishes you keep.

My Peacock eel died today after not eating... I would place frozen food in the tank and it would be ignored the only thing it would eat readily was cory eggs when they were breeding...they are MASTERS at escaping...and I mean MASTERS at escaping the tank...they are hard to feed and not a fish for beginners...and im not a beginner and I have trouble keeping them

Just as a note, I do research the fish I buy. It's my naughty husband that doesn't. He buys a fish and I get the joy of finding out it will get too big. (EX: my posts about the three tinfoil barbs he got me) I looked this guy up on the internet and got a bunch of factoids, I wanted an opinion of someone that perhaps owned one. My husband supprised me one day with the fish, and I knew nothing about it. I've never actually seen him eating, but I feed the fish before I go to bed and then turn the light off (I heard they only eat at night). Do either of your know what they like or could he be eating what's in the gravel?

QuotheRaven, you have to train your eel to take frozen food. mine even after a few months, refuse to accept anything frozen. i eventually gave up and fed them with live food.

Audfish, i'm glad to hear that you do research. spiny eels in general eat only live food. forget about flake or pellets, they'd just ignore them. your eel could go a max 3 weeks without food before it staves to death. its true they hunt at night in nature, but once you get them used to your feeding schedule, that could change. live brine shrimps, bloodworms, blackworms are an excellent choice. i would not really go for tubifex cause of all the disease and all.
