hello

i have 2 parrot platies and one is sightly bigger than the other one, every night at 9:30 the slightly bigger one follows the other one exact moves, it is right next to it and every now and again it rubs the bottom of its belly on the other ones belly, it does this for about a hour, during this routine the slightly bigger one goes up to the top of the tank where the water is and sticks its mouth out of the water for about 6-7 seconds and breathes our air is this normal? are they trying to mate or is this just some strange activity let me know a.s.a.p

Parrot Platies?
Are they just a colour morph of Platies?
Platies dont usually gulp for air, make sure your heater isnt going more then it should
It is not abnormal for platies to chase eachother, its probably a male chasing a female, trying to make her mate with him

i know platies dont usually gulp for air thats y i cant understand why mine is doing this, the heater is set to the right temperature, it dosent do it often jus like once in a hour when they are playing this game, after it goes to the top of the tank it goes near the bottom and rests for a bit and then starts over again, chasin the other one.

i would suggest removing the chaser as it is oviously harrasing the other one too much.
BTW
How big is your tank?
Other fish?
Water Params.(PH,Ammonia,Nitrite,Nitrate)?
etc etc

I READ ABOUT THAT THE FEMALE RUBS THE TUMMY ON THE MALE TRYING TO GET THEY TO MATE

MY KRIBS DID THE SAME (THE FEMALE RUBBING HER PINK BELLY ON THE MALE AND SHE WAS SHOWING OFF I THINK)

WOKE UP THIS MORING AND FOUND A BUNCH OFF EGGS :hyper: :kana:

yer u was right, the platy has laid eggs, i think, there is a ornament in my tank which has a hollow space in int and the smaller platy (which i believe is the female because the other one has a bigger tail and bigger dorsal fin) is constantly in it and i think that she is laying eggs, its really good news, cheers

well you're completly wrong there :p
Platies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young like we do, and do not lay eggs.
I suggest you read the Livebearer FAQs to help you out

well maybe your right there, i have never had platies before so i dont know what to expect to see from them, but now the female keeps going inside the hollow ornament and staying there for a while ever now and agin and then it comes out for a bit and then goes out, i dont acctually know if there are eggs are in there because i cant see behind it i just assumed that, all i know is that she goes in there

Probably hiding from the male

I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM BUT WHAT I NO IS SOME OF THOSE FISH (FEMALES) CAN HOLD THE MALES SPERM INSIDE THEM :dunno:

But platies dont lay eggs. Are you sure its not parrot cichlids you have?
How big are they and can you get a pic?
There should be more pics in the livebearer and cichlid sections at the top of the forum as suggested for you to look at.
