I just treated my tank with anticrustacean parasite stuff and all my fish look really sad, the guppy and dwarf gourami are sitting right at the top of the tank and all of the fish are a lot more docile than normal. Any advice - I know O2 can be low after treating is there any way of improving this without having to buy an air pump. Also I have "Nutrafin cycle" but Im confused wether or not I should add some to the water? Only put the treatment in last night.
Thanks XX

Can i ask why you are using that med, as it very powerful and will wipe the bacteria colony out, you definately need to improve aeration with this med, so i would get an airstone, the only time you use that nutrafin cyclle is when you have finished using the med and run some black carbon, you add it after to kick start the bacteria colony again.

Had been having probs with my fish ever since buying a couple of guppies from my local pets world (will avoid in the future), next time I did a water change I noticed little white worm things in the tank, I had a small sucking loach die which had been doing all sorts of strange things likes lying on its side, rubbing against things (i think thats what he was doing). On of the members of staff at the pretty good local fish shop back in bham where Im from said it was likely to be anchor worm and that id need something pretty strong to sort it out. Would appreciate advice if you think that he was wrong, will pick up an air stone tomorrow.

What do the worms look like as anchor worm is stringy looking with a forked tail.

just white and worm shaped! Not sure bout any more detail. I said that to the guy in the shop though but dunno! (ive never fed them live food incase that makes a diff)

It is a very strong med as external parasites like worms are nasty things, keep an eye on water quality, though believe me the stats will go off the chart, fingers crossed, as the med is powerful and the water stats won't help either so it could be touch and go, good luck, also i would get alot of aeration going in your tank to help them with the med and bad water quality.

Would of rather got to the bottom of the worm, usually anchor worm and lice like that attach themselves to the fish gills, body, or even fins, always best to no what you are dealing with, but if they were flicking and rubbing there is something nasty in the tank, have you added any new fish or live plants, as they can come in on them.

Anchor Worm (a.k.a. Lernaea)

Symptoms:

Infected fish can be seen with whitish red worm-like threads, about ¼ inch long. Trailing at the rear of female parasites are two long, tube-like egg sacs. The parasites can be found anywhere on the body of the fish, including the eyes, gills and fins. Raised ulcers may appear at the site of attachment. Consequently, secondary bacterial infections may occur. The tale-tale sign that your fish is infected will be if you notice it rubbing or scraping against objects in the aquarium. It does this in an effort to remove the parasite.

Cause:

The parasitic crustacean Lernaea. Lernaea burrow into the muscle and gill tissue of fish, often times reaching as deeply as the internal organs, causing severe damage. Heavy infestations can cause significant weight loss and death.

Treatment:

You should kill all visible worms by dabbing them with a cotton swab, dipped in Potassium Permanganate or an anti-parasitic medication. Then you should carefully remove them from the fish with tweezers. You should kill the parasites before removing them because if they have burrowed deeply, removing them alive could cause the fish pain and significant physical damage. Once you’ve removed the parasite, you should then dab the wounds with Methylene Blue to prevent secondary bacterial infections from occurring. It is highly recommended that you feed the fish with medicated food. The tank will also need to be treated to kill any unseen, free-swimming juvenile parasites. You can use Fluke Tabs, Clout, Paragon or Trifon for this.
