I bought a betta from a store in State College, PA because she was going to be killed. I thought at first she had a swim bladder disorder because she only moves her side fins and her back end will be sideways when she moves around. Though the more I've read the more it sounds like swim bladder disorders cause the fish to sink. I saw a brief article (not particular to bettas) about fish paralysis. Anyone ever heard of that? It's like she's paralyzed from the "waist" down. I know she won't ever be completely fine, but I love my Pumpkin all the same! Here are a few pictures. She goes vertical when I move her a bit, but as you can see in later photos, she does appear "normal" when relaxed. She just doesn't swim much. She's a bit more red than she appears in the pictures too. Oh, and before anyone says anything, she was only by the window so I could get a good amount of light for the pictures! All of my fish are safely tucked away from windows and drafts. :) She seems happy, she's at a level where she can coast over to the side and see my other bettas.

Here are a few more pictures:

And one more:

Thank you, I love her.

Yes, I have no will power. I already saw a male ct with the same issue...how do I sneak him in without Mom finding out...hmm...

Aw poor thing. Wonder how things like that happen sometimes though. I love her color. She is in her own right, a beautiful fish. She has more of a advantage in my eyes than a disability. The paralysis only makes her more beautiful. It gives her uniqueness and charm that would win over any fishkeepers heart, no matter how twitchy she is.

Yes, she's in her own little glass container. I only keep her in about an inch to two inches of water. That way, if any food sinks, she can still bend and reach it. I love her so much!

As for the sneaking in comment, nicely done...nicely done. I think I know what to do to get that other male...I get my wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning and a fishy sure would make my mouth feel better! Ha, I'm awful...I may go back for him anyway.

hahaha...well when you get older and it isn't your mom, it will be your husband! lol

You know how I have been able to sneak in a new fish? Petsmart and Petco offer surveys on their receipts. If you take the survey (petsmart takes about 5 minutes, and petco takes about 15 seconds) then you get either $2 or $3 store credit right away. So then I can say "what honesy, it's FREE" and his eyes light up and he says "well ok!" hehehe

Also do like liz does and rearrange them hehe. I always plan to sneak one in but end up telling Chris about my new betta. Last time it was plants..I "needed" new plants and didn't want to tell my husband. On the way home (about a 22 minutes drive) I schemed ways to sneak it into my fish room...I decided my purse was the best way "hmm how do I get my purse in there without looking suspecious"....but as soon as I walked in the door I just gave him this insanely guilty look and fell into his arms saying "IM SORRY im totally hopeless!!! im not even going to deny it anyway, I am JUST very addicted!" At that point he wa sonly relieved to know I was only talking about fish stuff LOL :shout:

Ha! That's great. The best thing is my boyfriend is totally obsessed with fish too, so we've had a great bonding over these little guys. And in the long run (hopefully) I won't have to worry about sneaking them in!
