are paradise fish gouramis?

i heard they are easy to breed and bubblenest builders... i wasnt sure if this post belongs here but they look like gouramis and breed like bettas so i thought id find out here :D

From what I can find out Paradise Fish are of the subfamilia Macropodinae which contains the 4 genus: Betta, Macropodus (Paradise fish), Malpulluta and Parosphromenus. This means that bettas are closely related to paradise fish but not in the same genus.

Macropodinae is a sub-familia of the familia Anabantidae which also contains the sub-familia Trichgasterinae containing the genus Colisa and Trichogaster which contain the gouramis so there is a close realtion between the two.

I asked the lady in the pestore the same question and she said that they aren't exactly the same....She also said that you can't have two males in the same tank or they will fight till the death.

On a side note, it seems like they can be sort of bullies, bothering the other fish and such but never hurting them.

confusing, yet interesting.. lol

i have an emtpy 10 gallon waitin for some fish to breed in it... thought about paradise fish... any other ideas?.. i already got a breeding pair of bettas in another 10 gallon... this 10 gallon is in my room !!!! so its gotta be something cool.. anyone had experience breeding paradise fish... would they be ok in a 10 gallon... will they eat their babies?

thanks for the replies

A 10 gallon tank is not big enoiugh for even one paradise fish. It is neither a gourami nor a betta, its kind of a mix. the male has large colorful fins like a betta and also has feelers like a gourami. It is a more aggressive fish than many gouramis and bettas. Two males can stay in the same tank if the tank is big enough.

How big is your paradise fish?? My two are about 4 inches each and when i bought them i was told a min of 30 gallons for one..

The paradise is a member of the Labyrinth family (air breathers, just like Gouramis and Bettas). I have two males in my tank, and they tend to avoid each other, but occasionally will meet, darken their colors dramitically, and circle around each other doing fin displays. Its amazing to watch, and so far, they just seperate and go their merry ways.

o, ok... so paradise fish arent for me ... thanks everyone :D
