My original topic can be located at http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=202536 explaining the details of the system on the previous attempts. I followed the advice given to me there. This is just some background info if you wanted to see it, but not really required to see it for the rest of the post.

I have tried 3 more setups for my tank, and the pump still gets extremely hot. It's also becoming an expensive problem, as I keep wasting tubing, pvc parts, etc.

So, I let it sit for a while, then thought up a testing solution. I cut two 1" (inner diameter), 1 foot long, tubes off and stuck them on both ends of the pump using a 1" tubing to 3/4" connector (the pump takes 3/4" inlet and outlet). Then I put this pump directly beside my pond (it's a 5x4 about 2.5 feet deep at the lowest point, small fish pond). It's a quick in and out of the pond, no filtration even hooked into it, so it couldn't be getting resistance.

The pump still heats up to the point where I can't put my hand on it for more than a second or two, after a few hours. This is outside, with plenty of air circulation around it, no direct sunlight hitting it, and pulling off a pond using only a mere 2 feet of tubing total. I know it'll take a while to raise the temp of a pond (so worrying about that isn't a big deal), but this can't be normal operation. Every review I've read about a PanWorld pump says they are barely warm to the touch and add little or no heat to the water, which is why I bought the stupid thing in the first place...I would have been much happier with a cheap $20 pump at this point...

Is mine just broken or how the heck do I get this working? If I can get it working on the pond with a filter of some type, it can just stay out there and I'll buy a different one for my fish tank.

Also, any other recommendations on a pump I can just finally use with my tank without so much hassle? I've lost over a week of my life and lots of money just "attempting" to get this working...I do not want to buy another PanWorld pump, so something else please. If I had the option, I'd return every item I have and just get a canister filter, but I don't have that now :( It has been sitting around doing nothing for too long.

If recirculating off a pond with 2' of appropriate diameter pipe still makes it too hot to touch, something's wrong. Likely the main shaft is not seated properly and causing undue friction somewhere in the pump/motor. This can happen if the pump is dropped or jarred at any point during shipping or handling. This can also happen if the pump is ran out of spec for too long.

I'd check with Panworld about a replacement as often pumps are covered under 1 year warranties.

Moving forward, if you'd like to go with a different pump, the first thing you'll have to do is figure out what the pressure drop of the filter components you're choosing is. You may have to contact the manufacturer for this. Often times external filter modules such as you're attempting to use have significant pressure drop and may require a pump rated for high head pressure to overcome this. So for example, if your filters have a total of 4 feet of pressuredrop you'd want to select a pump with somewhere around 10 feet of head or more of maximal head pressure. You want to make sure that the pump is capable of creating significantly more head pressure than the sum of the pressure drop of the filters.
