Hi there,

I've quarrantined three new neon tetras. They were looking pretty pale when I got them home, but one of three perked up after being acclimated.

Request Help

Tank size: 34L
pH: around 7
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5ppm
tank temp: 26-28 degrees celcius

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): All fish are swimming together and not swimming unusually. Two out of three have only the red stripe (they looked that way in the bag on the way home too), no olivey colour along the spine, no blue stripe. The colouring suggests neon tetra disease...but they behave as though they're healthy.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: Only got them today, but will change 10-20% daily.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Sponge media, SeaChem Matrix and ceramic noodles, and added Prime.

Tank inhabitants: Just these guys at the moment.

In my experience with neons they tend to lose colour when stressed as well as when they are ill.
Good call on quarantining them but I think its more likely due to being stressed out. Better keep them quarantined until sure though.
Personally I quarantine all new fish as its all too easy to get an infected fish that wipes out your whole tank.

I thought it would be stress, but one of three has all his colour and two look like some of the neon tetra variants on this page: http://bubblesaquarium.com/fish_Tetras.htm

So I think they might be selectively bred or part albino. One hopes.

Yep, I'm sure it's tail rot. Ammonia and nitrites are still 0, with nitrates between 5 and 10ppm. I hope it clears up on its own. Otherwise, Melafix?
