would painting the tank whilst it is stocked affect the fish inside?

Im thinking of painting all tanks the same colour on the sides and the back, but was wondering if the paint would 'seep' through the glass... what with glass being porous(sp) and all that.

Well, its not terribly reccomended, but might work. Paint wouldn't seep into the tank through the glass, but if there is inadequate ventillation in the room, paint fumes might settle in and poison the inhabitants. The better question is, how are you planning on getting behind a tank that has water/fish in it to actually paint it... Unless you're Gumby, that might get a little difficult ;)

with a roler and very long arms hehehehe

my LFS did say that i would have to make sure that the lids were air tight shut, so i assume thats due to what you mean by fume poisoning.... Cheers for the info mate.

P.S whos Gumby?

Yeah, definitely have to be sealed... And turn off all airstones and venturi's.

Gumby is an American cartoon about a character (gumby) whose body is essentially gum. He's a tad flexible ;)

do what im doing get a card board box (big) and paint it your desired color then just tape it to the back. you get the same beauty and its not permanent.

black poster board? why paint the actual tank? thats just stupid

erm, cause i dont intend on changing the colours of the back ground in my fish house and if you look at the pic of one of my betta tanks in the pics section, you will see how much better it looks painted sky blue :)

I also think it harsh to say its stupid when many LFS's paint theres. Not easy getting round the back of a stack of racking to sort out a back drop that has become displaced. Once its painted its there for life :)

Use several coats of water-based paint-avoid oil-based as it can, under certain circumstances, react with any silicone it comes into contact with.
