Paint Or Varnish?

Just setting up my first ever tank and want to use lights for plants so i had to make a hood for a hexagonal tank,does it matter/make any differance if i paint the inside white (some in the shed) or should i varnish it,the tank has a glass lid. Thanks

I've just used a combo of both paint and varnish - enamel for the white paint and poly varnish for the exterior / hatch part of the hood.
Didn't go for the full inside white job as 3/4 of my hood opens up to allow for maint etc and wanted it to look a tad nicer than a white panel.
