hi, ive had my newt for about a month now and decided to give it a nice new clean enclosure, as the other one had a couple of things wrong with it (never using live plants again... lol), now its coming up for air quite a lot, and im not sure if this is normal or not, as far as i can tell, the water is fine and the temp is about 62 degrees... any help would be nice :)

here are some pics of the enclosure:

hope it looks good, it wasnt great before i changed.

BTW: its a 5 gallon tank

Beautiful newt!
You have a filter, right? Some kind of water current at the top?
Air pump, Filter, etc.

no, ive just established that the reason shes coming up is because i dont. i was given the info that this particular newt wouldnt need a filter and someone on caudata has just told me that it does lol :( so its off to get me the necessary equipment, but other than that, she seems happy and healthy to me, quite the swimmer and quite energetic.

I would move some plants to a corner so the newt can easily reach the surface if it wants to, and a small island for land.

Well, first check what kind of water current it'd prefer. As from what i've learned, my ADF's don't like a strong current. Very slow frogs. :p
Check out paddletail newts. Like, some fish I think cichlids, or marines? like a stronger faster current.

ALSOO, if I don't stock my 10g with honey gouramis/dwarf puffs, maybe I'll go with paddletails? ;)
is a 5g reccommended for 'em?

well, im pretty sure paddletail newts are required with AT THE VERY MINIMUM of 5 US GALLONS (im not shouting, just accentuating lol) if you live in the UK then thats around 3 or 4 gallons, i keep mine in a 3.5 gallon aquarium and she loves it. With my new filter fitted there is now a strong current and a lot more oxygen as it has a built in bubble thingy too :) lol.
As far as im concerned you want around 5 ish gallons for each newt, but dont think you can keep 2 newts in a 10 gallon coz they are EXTREMELY aggressive (ive heard reports of a paddletail ripping the leg off of a full grown tiger salamander!).

if you plan on keeping two together, and i mean if you really, really must, you will need a LOT of hiding places and potential sight barriers for each newt to make sure they never come across eachother, when i got my paddletail she was being kept in a 2 gallon box with about 25 other paddletails, there was a lot of scarring and missing limbs and one of them was just as thin as a pencil (clearly too weak to fight for food). So yeah, 5 gallons is the bare minmum for a newt. But by all means you can put one newt in a ten gallon, kit it out with sand, hiding places and things for her to climb up and you would have one EXTREMELY happy newt! i never get bored of my ruby, shes always a sight to watch, even if she does sleep all day! :hyper:

!
Now how am I going to get a paddletail..
LOL, they only sell green anoles, and Fire bellied toads here. I'll go check at other lfs when I have the chance.

anyways, filter working fine? The newt stopped going up?

Chinese Firebelly Newts are common try looking for them.

Dont worry mate, It'll be a long time before I do.
First I have to get a 55g, (wow my dad get's himself a new acura 2010 in the future, gonna bug him for a 55. I mean, he did say money wasn't an issue at the time :D!)
Then I have to transfer all my 29g's into my 55g, -- wait, cycle it first 8-|
Then I'm gonna have to make a GREAT GREAT aquascape for my cray, which i'm advancing from a 10gallon to a 29gallon.
Then I'm gonna possibly, think of a stock for my 10g. (either dwarf puffersplanted, Honey gouramis + cories, Fire bellied toads, 5 african dwarves + some fish, newts. ( I can I.D. most, paddletails, chinese/japanese, warty (SP?), etc. :p)

Ruby is a joy to live with now, she did go on a rampage the other day and pull everything in the tank up in a bit of a fit so i just put it all back and shes been sat just on the filter with her tail wrapped around the bubble blowing part, either that or perched on a submerged rock all day watching me type (shes next to my computer...and the TV, which is her second favourite thing to look at :|) ill try to get you some pics up if i can. Im after an axolotl next, gonna get a nice 15-20g for one once i move out of the girlfriends parents and start living in my own place with the girlfriend once we go to uni coz we have too many tanks in one room! (a 30 gallon, a 10 gallon and a little betta bedside table tank lol as well as my newt enclosure, and were only in a small room! i dont know how i keep finding space!). so yeah hope you figure something out!

So the problem was just a filter, / water current right? :) :shifty:
