Hi all.
I have an issue i would like to get to the bottom off.
I have a Rainbow Fish that has developed growths on his body.I am unsure what it is so i have seperated him into my quarenteen tank.I have medicated with a broad spectrum anti parasite/anti fungal medicine and after a week it seems no worse or no better. He is happy enough eating well and is as colourful as ever.I first noticed this about a month ago when there were a couple rainbows harassing each other,i thought it my be stress related. They first appeared around his anal fin then it spread to the dorsal fin area.It is now quiet unsightly but doesnt seem to be causing him any distress. If anyone has seen something similar that they can piont me in the right direction this would be great. :/
My tank has been good for a long time i do regular water changes.
Ph is 7.2
Amm 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 60 are a little high due to my stocking levels. The fish i bought small have grown quite large.I have just set aup another tank so will rehome some bigger fish soon.

what kind of growths? inflamations? irritations? slimy skin? fuzzy scales? need a little more description than just a growth :)

I agree you havent said what's wrong with him, an overstocked tank can cause desease, can you explain the symtoms or we can't help you, plus post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph.

Sorry but they are really hard to describe.
They are lumps i suppose. They are under the scales,it doesnt look like he has lost any scales around the areas. They are small lumps in a cluster.Like when you see cells under a microscope. Sort of like little bubbles under the scales.I suppose the scales in that area are a little raised but i think it is due to the lumpy tissue under them.
There is no funges (white growthes etc) just raised bumps in a couple of areas.
PH is 7.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 60 but am due a water change tommorow. :dunno:

could be a number of things

gas bubble dx.
bacterial granuloma
cyst
vesicle
neoplasia

if you could get a picture it would help

Do the lumpy growths look like a cauliflower.

Sadly yes but not a good outcome i'm afraid. not the writer of this information below.
Lymphocystis

Symptoms:

Fish infected with Lymphocystis will present with clusters of whitish, berry-like growths on the skin and fins. These "clusters" may resemble small clutches of eggs or cauliflower (hence, it is sometimes called Cauliflower Disease). They will be clearly visible and may even become extremely large. This disease often affects the fins first.

Cause:

Viral infection. The virus will eventually kill the fish if it is unable to mount a strong enough immune response as the virus rampages through the fish’s tissues, destroying its cells.

Treatment:

As with all viral infections, there is no suitable cure or efficacious treatment; however Quick Cure claims to be helpful. I have also heard of people who trim the fish's fins, followed by several baths in Malachite Green. Fortunately, this disease is uncommon and in some cases, infected fish are able to recover quickly without treatment.

Lymphocystis is highly infectious. When infected cells from the fish’s skin or fins burst the virus is spread throughout the aquarium and can remain contagious for periods of up to two months. Fish not showing symptoms should be removed from the aquarium and placed in quarantine, away from other fish, for at least 60 days. Note, remove uninfected fish, not the other way around because the aquarium has become contaminated. The infected aquarium should be emptied and thoroughly disinfected before returning any fish to it. Do not use soap to clean the aquarium.

That is just perfect. I have quarentined him so i may have inffected this tank also.
Thanks for the info, this forum is such a valuable resource.

:S

Will start a big clean and shall be very carefull.

I'm not sure this is lymphocsytis.

The descriptions given don't really fit.
It most commonly affects marine fish and some types of cichlid.
A number of other conditions have similar appearance.

I'm not saying it definately isn't, but it may not be - again if you can post a picture it would help.

As for lymphocystis - generally the prognosis is pretty good, and most fish recover - providing any environmental factor or stressor is removed (e.g. water quality, bullying etc.)

Sorry, yes i agree a pick would help, i've had ntd so no how you are feeling.
