Hello.
I've got a 3 foot tank (40g I think), I've apparently got too many fish in there already, but I want more.
What is the reason that You can't overstock your tank???
I really want to know.
I don't have any aggressive fish, my angels are tiny.
So apart from the tank getting dirtier, which I do and would keep clean, Why can't i put more fishies in my tank.

If you wonder why I'm asking this, it may seem to be a stupid question. But I want more fish and want to know why I can't have them.
Thankyou in advance for your replys

Same reason why a family with twelve kids doesn't live in a one bedroom apartment. People (and fish) need space. While 14 people can fit in a 1 bedroom apt, they won't be comfortable.

hey mate,

Think of it this way, jump on the subway in peak hour and imagine yourself living like that continuously 24/7. Not too pleasant right? Why? because you don't have your own personal space.

You'll get pretty stressed that you can't have your own 'personal space'. Basically you are not providing a pleasant living environment for your fish.

Overstocking also leads to poor water quality and all sorts of diseases which can kill your fish. :-(

Imagine using the same water to wash with as other people.... not to mention the fact that the fish also use it as a toilet.

6 goldfish and your tank is already overstocked as it is. not to mention that goldfish should not be kept with tropical fish. i think you have way too many fish and shouldn't get anymore. if you want more fish, please get another tank or you'll be risking the health of your fish

Ok. I feel guilty now. :-(
There's a girl at work who might be taking my goldfish for her brothers pond, which is apparently about 3 metres diametre.
So that gets rid of them.
I'd honestly love to have 10 fish tanks :p , but I've got a 40g and a 5g and no room for any more, nor the money. SO I guess I'll leave getting more fish until later.
Thanks for your help. ;)

Don't feel guilty. We're glad to help. Just glad you asked the question before going ahead.

can you give the dimensions of ur tank, as a 3ftx15x12 tank is only 22.6 (or roughly that.) iv never known a 3ft tank to be 40gals and im intriuged about the dimensions of it.

Just for info, here are some standard tank sizes (in US gallons):

36x18x12 - 30 g
36x12x20 - 38 g
36x18x16 - 40 g "breeder"
36x12x24 - 45 g
36x18c18 - 50 g
36x18x24 - 65 g

I think Once you take the Goldfish out your tank would be just about ok... I wouldnt think of adding anymore fish to it thats for sure!

Ben
