Ok. Thanks to this great forum and the smart people on it, I have decided to go out tonight and buy a 20 gallon high, glass aquarium that will be my sump for my 75 gallon reef tank. I have decided to do this so that I can build a baffle system to eliminate micro bubles. I will be putting it under the tank in the cabinet. So, I have also decided to eliminate the hang on overflow and just drill a hole in both the main tank and the sump tank for the overflow system with a junction.

Here is my question: I have a return pump "qiute one 4000" which pushes 1017 gph and the head it about 4 feet to the tank which puts it at about 750 gph. I want to drill a hole in the main tank and run pvc pipe from the overflow to the sump. With this type of flow, can I use one 1-1/2" pvc pipe for the drain or do I need to go as far as a 2" pvc. In other words, can one 1-1/2" pvc pipe handle an overflow of 750 gph???

Thanks for everyone's help. :)

Yes, 1.5" bulkheads and pipe will handle the proposed flowrate. I'd always use two drains, one higher than the other as a backup. Cause WHEN it gets clogged, having the backup will save you lots of headache
