I am wondering how to avoid over feeding or letting uneaten food sit for too long when my ropefish will only eat when food has been sitting out for about 5 minutes. Isn't that too long to sit out? Is there a clean type of food that would be okay to leave out like that that will not cloud my water?

Is it the fish waste products that clouds my water due to overfeeding or is decomposition of the organic foods...or both?

Advice on the issue is appreciated as at this point, the only explaination for my persistant cloudiness seems to be a food issue....

it should aloney be set out for a time of three min. the water can get cloudy from decomposition and bacteria bloom. You should be doing water changes to prevent this. You also clean your filture regularly and syphon the bottom of the tank once every two weeks to get up all the waste and not eaten food.

I hope this helps you.

Wait the 5 min, let him eat it should not cloud up water. You can always remove uneaten food if you are worried.

Dont know too much about that fish, is it nocturnal, what are you feeding him?

hi the best food for this is hikari flake it floats and its also on a special offer 2 for 1 either small or big so hurry and get some as it does NOT cloud the water

Personally, I think (like most things) the "three-minute feeding" is just a guideline. Letting food sit for 5 minutes will not cause problems due to decomposition or bacteria. These things take a while. You can safely let your food sit for a while. My tank generally has food in it for about 20 minutes and I don't have any trouble. Some fish don't eat until dark. I feed about 5 minutes before lights out, then leave the food alone for about 20-25 minutes so my nocturnal eaters and snails can get at it. I have great looking water and no trouble with water params. You have to experiement first though, to see how much food to use. I had to test several amounts before I could comfortably do this. The amount of food I leave in the tank is gone within 30-40 minutes. Leaving it for hours and days is what will cause problems. Especially as this accumulates over the course of a week and longer.

She's nocturnal but feeds in the very early morning. I give her tubifex worms or water fleas. She does not like to eat off the top of the water so I have to feed her things that sink...I tried feeder fish but she won't eat them....

Thanks all!
