otos

Since this is an oto topic, I have a question too.

I traded in my chineese algae eater for one today (catfish-otocinclus)
I was told they don't really like to be alone, but the fish store only had one. Is it true that I should get 2 more? My tank is only 10 gallons.

(I have live plants and the fish store guy said they like them a lot)

Thanks

Get at least 3.

They will act abnormal, and be lonely otherwise.

Well ive always learnt to keep them in groups.

Algae is a plant..........

They are algae eaters

Maybe that's why?

They are happier in a small group, three should be enough. depends on the other fish and the tank though.

I too had heard ottos don't eat plants cos their mouths aren't the right shape.

To be pedantic, algae isn't a plant at all, it's a protazoan - an creature with both animal & plant features that has chloroplasts allowing it to make food via photosynthesis like plants do.

New info for you that I just learned today. I got some plants in the mail yesterday, planted them this morning, and my otos have torn up the Jungle Val. There are little holes all over it where they've been snacking. When I first put it in, I know I watched a bunch of them rush over to it, but I just thought they wanted to "sit" on it like they do all my other plants. Just now I walked in and looked again, and they've been making lunch out of it! :(

It's not as if there's not algae in the tank for them... and I occasionally drop in some peas, zucchini, banana slices, and algae wafers for them too.
