hello,

ive got a betta in a 20 gallon tank. and looking to add some more fish. I really like these oto guys, saw a nice big fat one at the fish store chomping on some plants, and looked cool.. but the fish store guy said he probably wouldnt get along with a betta, or the betta wouldnt like the oto actually.

so any advice here? and also, are there different types of oto's? what kind should i be looking into getting to co-exist with my betta?

well ive got 2 otos at the moment getin more soon, and they are really peaceful and just mind there own buisness. Im not shore about ur betta bothering them i wouldnt of thought he would.

but if u go get some oto's make sure there are plenty of hiding places :)
oh and they prefere live plants.

hope this helps

they like to hide do they? will do.

i may just go with 3 corys now though. although i do like those oto's.. who knows. im undecided yet.

Ottos and bettas get on fine, mine always did, the betta sometimes swims up to them just to spite them but id say mb go to a different shop

i have an otto and a betta in a ten gallon, and the oto doesn't seem to care about the betta. The otto is too fast anyway. :)

ottos like to be in groups. If you're not keeping them by the half dozen they will not be as happy as they could be.

ottos last weeks in aquariums...not years...they must be one of the worst fish for an aquarium...you want a large tank atleast 30 gallons with lots of big leaved plants that can cultivate brown algae (their diet) fail to meet one of these and they wont last two seconds...the statistics for these little things are horrendous

Weird Cause I had my 2 Otos for nearly a year now in a 15 gal tank. Just depends on how well you keep your tank and stuff. They are very hard though if you are new to taking care of a tank.

agreed with above. ive heard that they are sensitive and hard to keep, but in my planted tanks (which is where id ever put an oto anyway) theyve be great and never lost one. if they dont look as tho they have a pot belly, there isnt enough algae and you need to suppliment their diet with blanched veggies or algae wafers.
i have otos with my betta and he sometimes swims to inspect what they are doing, if the otos feel threatened they zoom away. a betta could never catch an oto unless there is something seriously wrong with the oto. if you have lots of live plants (its not that they like to hide but need the surface area to grow algae that they can eat, and all plants have some algae on them. otos keep the plants clean and healthy. the tank glass is just not enough surface area for them to graze as it alone can not produce enough food for them. lots of plants can.
ive kept otos in diferent numbers and from my observations, while they occasionally find each other and hang for a while together, most of the time they all are off doing their own thing. i dont think they are any "happier" or not. it's anthropomorphizing their activity.
cories or otos, both good choices for a nice tank like that for a betta. plant it up(bettas like lots of plants anyway) and get both.
cheers!
dont forget some snails too.
