Are oto's realy good at eating algae. How many should I put in a heavily planted 30 gallon tank. Are they easy to spawn. Sorry for all the question's just got back from my vacation and my tank is overruned by algae.

hi jesse. welcome to TFF. hope we can help. Ottos are good at eating algae but not all types. they are better at preventing it. even though they are social put 3 or 4 in and see if they start eating it. if this is the case get two more. they will be fine in the tank providing it is not already overstocked!. i have 6 in my 120ltr tank and i have never had any algae! they are cute little peaceful fish and are great. Also i advise putting some zuccini in the tank (corgette) once a week and leave it in there for 48 hours so they have something to eat as they are veggetarians. a fat otto is a happy otto! i also put sprouts in my tank and they like that but zuccini is the most popular. hope the holiday was good! anything else dont be afraid to ask or private msg me!. Hope that helped.

No my tank is'nt overstocked and do they eat cucumbers as we don't buy zuccini and yes the vacations was good.

My ottos are fat so they must be happy, they like their algae and hiding in the plants.

yes they do eat cucumber. howeveer you have to try to weight it down so i doesnt float. tie it to plant weights etc.

I love my Ottos.
They're very active and good fun to watch.
They do seem to poop a lot.
I have 5 in my 180 ltr tank along with about 3 very young fry. I was thinking of getting some more and maybe these fry would solve that problem! Hehe

They cleaned up some of my algae but they don't seem to clean it right off.

I believe that even when you can't see it there is some algae there, so would expect them to help to prevent algae rather than clearing it all away.
