Our local shop has some jumbo otos in stock...

they are normally spot on for their naming but these are not on planetcatfish.

they look exaclty like normal otos only theuy are about 3" long :)

anyone come across them before?

are they as sensative as their smaller counter parts?

The biggest species of oto i can find grows to about 6cm...

So my guess is that it isnt actually an otto, rather some species closer related to a pleco or possibly whiptale catfish? Lots of fish shops just "make up" fish species if they get in a delivery from a supplier with a fish they know nothing about.....worth remembering this.

Ben - you should know me better than that :p

It's a giant otto! body shape, colouring, everything
no way its a whiptail

I should have got a photo today while i was in there.

I had a bit of a chat and they have come from Peru.

breezer - nope, not one of them.

I have this species in my fish book, says it only grows to 6cm though... thats not "jumbo" in my book :p

hmmm... they were as long as my index finger to the knuckle on my hand...

about that long :D

looks about 6cm to me... they must be fully grown...

Could be different species though, so hard to tell! Have you asked the shopkeeper if he has any info as to whether they were wild caught or what importers they came from? If you can find this out then you have more change of finding out what fish it is.

about that long :D
That's huge! Or maybe it's just my screen...

They seem interesting, if they eat algae they would be great for some of my tanks with medium sized fish :)

Finaly tracked this bugger down, there are two species of giant oto; Macrotocinclus affinis and Macrotocinclus flexilis both of which look like your average run-of-the-mill oto, but are much larger (macro means large)
