I bought a small 3" Oscar and have now seen him grow to a healthy looking 5" fish. He is so interactive! He will eat from my hands and crunches pellats like a 3 year with a blocked up nose - lots of noise!

He loves to eat worms, mussles and Hikari large pellats.

Only problem is he won't share his tank with anybody.

i love oscars, they'r like puppys...what size tank do you have'em in..?

I only have 1 currently in 40g tank with Fluval external and a fluval internal running. He has 20% water changes every week but is very good at letting me know when the water quality has dropped as he goes slightly grey.

He is very much a pet - unlike most other fish.

Up the water changes to 50% every week.

water quality is one of the main reasons for HITH and by providing good quality now you can avoid HITH althogther!!

Sounds like a good diet. Go easy on the mussels as they can qucikly foul the water.

I fed some of those to my large (11" goldie plecos last night and they devoured them in short order.

Gave a few leftovers to my red terrors and oscars as well. They loved em!!

Yeah 50% per week would be alot better esp w/all the good food you're feeding, and in that size tank you don't have many options as far as tankmates :/ what are the dimensions..?is it a 40 breeder...?

whats the minimum size tank you could put an oscar in?
"I" say a minimum of 75g but the "experts" say a 55g.

I think 55g's should be outlawed for large cichlids. I would rather use a 40g breeder than a 55g.

Either way, you either want to do twice weekly water changes or like CM said, do a 50% once a week, and have great filtration.

This goes for almost any of the larger cichlids whether it be SA or CA. That's exactly the reason I like them so much because they have personality and are a lot smarter than community fish. (imo)
