Tank size: 90 Gallons
pH: 6.7
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Tank temp: 78F
Age: ~1 year

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): 12" Albino Oscar has with green "algae-like" substance growing out of 3 shallow divots locations in his head. The "algae" is fluffy and not stringy. Head looks slightly gray compared to the usual light pinky beige color. Not very active (which is usual behavior for him). Likes to move the shell substrate around and look at himself at the bottom of the tank. Eats every morning and hangs out at the bottom looking at himself for the majority of the day (he did this in the previous tank a year and a half ago and then stopped once moved into the current tank; started this behavior up again about 3 months ago). Doesn't mess with the other tank mates nor do they mess with him. Will move him into 40 Gallon tank, without substrate, with Fluval 205 this weekend and medicate with coppersafe if nobody can identify this disease. I have posted on a different website and nobody could identify the disease but suggested medicating with copper.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 1/3 of the tank every other week

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Salt (0.1 on hydrometer)

Tank inhabitants: 4 Smaller cichlids (5"), 7 baby cichlids (1.5"), 2 tire track eels(10"), 2 peacock eels (5")

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): 2 pre-existing cichlids unexpectedly mated and had 7 babies approx 4 weeks ago

Exposure to chemicals: None

Substrate: Broken Shells (bought from fish store, contained bacteria); been in this tank for over a year; prior was ornamental rocks

Filter: Fluval 405 with biomax media

Location: California, USA

Is his head pitted with the green algae stuff growing out of it.
Could be hole in the head.
Also columnaris dosn't come in the colour green its usually white, greyish white, pink, yellow, brown.
Do you have live plants in your tank as its rare to have a nitrate of 0.

Look under hole in the head.
Lateral line desease.

I wouldn't say "pitted" but the area is sunk in 3-5mm or so. I looked at columnaris and hole in the head and neither fits for what this looks like. At one point I did have two large sword plants in the tank but took them out about a month ago. The last time I check the chemicals (which was a week ago) everything was normal and practically non-existant. The tank is at my folks house so I can't monitor it as much as I like. None of the other fish are effected and from what I can tell, the tank is normal.

Those poor fish!! Definitely not hole in the head

I think indents in the head region can still be hole in the head.
Pm tolak for some advice on your thread he's a mod.

Is it possible to load a pic up of the sick fish.
Never seen any deseases that are green in colour.

Ask him if he dosn't mind taking a look at your thread.

Thats a good link nosoup4 you left.
Usually happens on damaged skin.
Still want to know what the indents in the head are.

Thanks, I sent him a message. The indents are about 5mm wide and are only 3-5mm deep. It doesn't look inflammed, just like it was sunk in. It does't look like any of the pics I've seen that are of hole in the head but I could be wrong. There are only three areas like this, two are close together on one side of the head; the other is on the other side. All three areas are between the eye and the gills.

HITH is a lesion disease, any lesion or injury that goes past the slime coat is an open invitation to fungus or bacteria.

What have you been feeding this fish, and do you run carbon in your filters?

Do the indentations appear discolored? Lighter/darker than the rest of him?

No lesions. The food he gets is a mix of the Hikari Gold, Staple, and another red pellet (all 3 are Hikari products) and gets the jumbo freeze dried shrimp. He eats both pellets and shrimp. No carbon (I don't think I ever had carbon in this tank but the tank before this one did).

Doesn't look any lighter or darker to me but my mom says that his whole head looks slightly grey (in all fairness, she was looking at it at night and the room doesn't have good lighting other than the light from the tanks so I don't think the head is grey).

Does it look like this?
