Looking (not sure) at a 75-100 gallon tank.

I would like an oscar for sure, and here are a few questions I have

1. What can be kept with an oscar in a tank this size (i like salvini, firemouth, green terror, JD, Red Devil)
2. Can I have tankmates?
3. Are there any combinations that have worked for u? ex. firemouth, JD, oscar

I am not expecting to put 3 big fish in there obviously maybe salvini, firemouth, oscar or whatever

A Definite tank size needs to be stated before any stocking can be determined

from those a Firemouth should be ok in a 75G and the JD, Salvini or GT might work in a 100G but with no certainties

2. Can I have tankmates?
Again depends on tanksize but large plecs, Bichirs, Dithers like Silver Dollars, Tinfoils are possibilities.

3. Are there any combinations that have worked for u? ex. firemouth, JD, oscar
Most situations turn out to be different,
I would stick to semi aggressive species such as a firemouth or Severum or Geophagus or possibly Convicts
larger species like GTs, and JDs are less likely to work in tanks under 150G IMO
Red Devils and Midas equivalents are probably best left alone

I agree with Davo. I am keeping a firemouth with my oscar right now in a 125 gallon and although they are babies, I think they will do fine together.

I had an oscar before and tried him with a Jack Dempsey in a 125 gallon, it didn't work out at all AND the oscar was bigger than tha JD. The JD beat the crap out of my poor oscar almost everyday and had him "assigned" to less than 1/4 of the tank. If he crossed over into the JD's "section" he would attack him very badly. I even moved everything around in the tank and he still attacked him.

I suppose it depends on the individual fish, but I'd say you're better off getting something like a firemouth or a convict. :good:

I don't get why people don't give convicts enough credit, I think they are adorable.

Another thing sord of off topic and random but, where do you get your driftwood?
Do you purchase it all ready? Do you find your own? Do you buy it and ready it?

I am not sure whether to go with....

1. oscar and large very aggressive tankmates (GT etc.)
2. oscar and not so aggressive tankmates (severum, firemouth, convict, black skirt tetra)
3. GT with aggressive tankmates
4. GT with not so aggresive tankmates

Any other recommended "not so aggressive" species that would work with either a GT or an oscar?

Thanks

I have a shoal of silver doallars with mone and it works perfectly

Ive got an Oscar and a GT in my 80G and they get along just fine :D .

i have my oscars in with 4 redclaw crayfish, a Synodontis eupterus and a Pimelodus pictus. it works very well.

the oscars inhabit the top two thirds of the tank and rest are all bottom dwellers.

2. oscar and not so aggressive tankmates (... black skirt tetra)

Black Skirts would get eaten, killed, ripped apart, mashed up, annihilated, you get the idea!

other less obvious suggestions are Blue Acara, Honduran Red Points, Sajica, T.Elliotti, Geophagus Sp., Nicaragua Cichlid

You still need to focus in on a tank size

my oscars are in with a pair of gold severum a pleco and my lfs will have my blue acaras in sometime this week.
