A couple weeks ago I switched my 10 gallon tank with a betta to sand bottom and a peice of Mopani wood from the LFS. Ever since then, the water has had an orange tint to it that won't go away. I've changed water three times. And every time for a couple days, it looks nice and clear and then goes right back to the orange. Is there something I can do to change this? I'm assuming it has something to do with the wood and/or sand.

that will be 'tannis' from the wood, you could take the wood out and boil it for an hour, that will help, but ultimatly its a case of waiting. the water will clear and ive been told active carbon will help speed things up.

did you boil/clean the wood before it went in or did you just plop it in the tank?

yea man its your wood. you should take it out in put it in a bucket for a week, keep changing the water in the bucket till it stops dyeing the water.

The wood will continue to leach tannins for a long time. It does slow down but will not stop entirely. Carbon has, as one of its abilities, the ability to remove organic molecules, like tannins, from the water. If you do not like the tannins look, they can be controlled using carbon but it will be an on-going need for carbon, not a temporary thing. Soaking for some significant time in another container allow you to avoid that first strong burst of color being in your tank, but will not eliminate it completely.
