My oranda started bleeding whilst I was performing a wen trim on him today. I stopped trimming it soon as I realised that there were red patch on the bit of wen that I cut from. I have been very careful and made sure not to even touch the skin of the oranda with the scissors so I definitely know it’s the wen that is bleeding.

I’m really shocked because the wen isn’t supposed to have any nerves. I returned him to his tank and he is swimming around fine but there is still red patch on the wen.

If I knew that it would bleed, I would never have done this. Shall I just leave him as it he is and see if he heals. I have hydrogen peroxide to dab on the wen if needed but I am reluctant to use it incase it goes on his eyes.

I’ve attached a few pics so you can see what it looks like.

I just don't get why it is bleeding

Does anyone know why this might have happened?

I have nothing useful to add, but I do have a question.

I have never owned this type of fish and therefore don't know the reason for trimming the wen. What is the purpose of doing so?

The wen grows over the fish's eyes and makes them blind. It's not a big problem since they can still find food as they have a good sense of smell. You can see in the first two pictures that there are no eyes visible. Some oranda owners will perform wen trimming on their orandas just so that the fish can see again.

Update

The red patch has almost dissapeared now. He seems to be swimming around happily and eating fine. I didn't need to use any meds so it's all good.
