Hiya...

I'm from the Uk and we've got 2 Oranda goldfish. looking for some advice if pos...

One had a small spot on its side. it looked like an actual spot that was raised from the skin rather than white spot. that spot eventually burst and the fish didnt seem bothered by this. since that, his scales have started to flake off and seem to peal away in the surrounding area where the spot was. it seemed to be getting slightly better over the past few days but after looking today, its scales seem to be scruffy looking and sore. any idea what this could be and should I try to treat and what with? the fish is happy, active and feeding well. the other fish isnt effected either. I have checked water params and all seem fine and no changes. we test often and do partial water changes once every 1-2 weeks.

I'd rather avoid treatments if possible, but if the fish is going to need it, I'd rather get something to help him.

thanks in advance

Dave & Gem

ps...tried taking a photo, but he wont keep still :)

would you say it looked like an ulcer ? if so and it hasn't been treated then the fish may also have contracted fin rot

A picture would really help but I would really isolate the fish if possible and start treating with a broad spectrum bactericide such as MYXAZIN

no it doesnt look like an ulcer, just like a sore from the spot bursting.
would u still treat it with MYXAZIN?
thanks for ur reply

Myxazin will help with any type of bacterial infection, whether the fish has an ulcer, finrot or has just simply caught itself on an object in the tank.

Sounds like the fish had a puss filled cyst, these are almost always bacterial infections and left untreated they will often burst so i suspect this is what your goldfish had. Now the cyst has burst the main thing is to help prevent secondary infection setting into the wound as if this happens it could be much more deadly than the original cyst itself.
Myxazin is a powerful anti bacterial and fungal med, on the negative side though it can harm the beneficial bacteria in the tanks filtration. I would suggest using a less biologically damaging anti bacterial med since the old cyst does not actually sound infected just yet, i would advise using a med like "anti internal bacteria" by Interpet, it is a good anti bacterial med and it doesn't harm the beneficial bacterial/biological filtration in the tank :good: .
