so, one thing I've noticed with my Tidal hob filters, is by design, they have several inlet slots on the filter box inside the tank... my Java ferns have taken advantage of those, whenever their babies break loose from the bunch, they end up finding a spot on these filters... i actually like that, as they aren't clogging them up with roots, the filters are still at full flow... and they kind of camouflage the filter...assuming they really take advantage of the water flow, as eventually the tangles get quite large..

this is a more newly set up tank, so less babies

this one has been going for around 2 years... the big white roots in this 2nd picture are not the Java Fern, those are from a peace lily

I let that go once, until the water flow stopped.

The roots reached the impeller, It was pretty impressive how they managed to wrap around it without obstructing it until there was too much.
 
I'm sure they would, on plants with normal roots the Java fern, are technically ryzomes, and don't spread the same
