Have you ever made home made fish food?

What are your opinions on it?

I have been thinking about it recently, not to fully replace flakes/pellets, but rather as a treat/supplement.  I have found several recipes that seem alright. What concerns me is the lack of vitamins and etc, but then again fish don't take vitamins in the wild, they get it from what they eat. So theoretically if you balanced what you put into it carefully, they would get the vitamins they need.  This balance may be difficult to reach to be fully nutritious, though.  I cook for my dogs, they receive no dog food (actually won't eat kibble anymore!) and saw a noticeable difference in their energy and coats when I switched over.  Even my vet asked what I had changed.  So I'm just curious if any of you feed home made food, or at least what your opinions are.

A recipe for example for example (found online, no credit to me)
  • 2 lbs. whole shrimp
  • 8 oz Salmon
  • 1 lb frozen peas
  • 1 lb frozen spinach
  • 1 small bag of mini carrots
  • 1 medium zucchini
  • ¼ cup spirulina powder
  • 6 centrum vitamins
  • 120 grams unsweetened gelatin powder
Procedure:
Steam carrots and zucchini until soft but not mushy. Remove from heat, strain and set aside. Prepare shrimp by removing its tails, rinse. Cut salmon into small cubes. Dissolve the vitamins in water. Add all ingredients in the blender and grind into a mush. Set aside.
In a pan, cook gelatin under low heat. Slowly pour the blended mixture into the gelatin. Stir well for about 2-3 minutes. Put the mixture in ice cube trays and place in the refrigerator. When the gelatin sets, you can put these into vacuum sealed bags or zip locks for easy storage.

this is very interesting, i have never wondered this but occasionally i do put in some zucchini into the tank my pleco loves it, but i do feed my fish live brine shrimp and frozen brine shrimp they prefer the live to the frozen wonder why :p, but making your own food is a good idea i guess and could be a replacement to normal flake, I'm sure they would get all the vitamins and nutrients from the veg you add it would be interesting to see what other people do and if people have done this before

Interesting question...I've only ever added pieces of vegetables into my tank. Making food sounds like a good idea to me

You've no need to worry about the nutritional side of things too much as you've said you only want to feed it as a treat. So, if your main feeding regime is only supplemented by this all will be good. I have discus and a range of corys, ottos, shrimp and tetra. I make my own discus food, but they also get prima and other granules to ensure a balance. Incidentally, I add some flake and pellets to my own recipe when making it for additional nutrients.
