ive read a few conflicting reports on this, that these snails arent good food for dwarf puffers as they dont need there teeth trimming down because they dont grow too large, and that these snails have shells that are too hard and may cause problems to my puffers teeth

some have also said that the DP will just suck the snail out of its shell and wont try to crunch the shell

advice needed please as i have a snail tank with about 10 common snails with about 100-200 baby snails in, and have just added the malasian snails earlier(about 50 of them) and didnt realise at the time the species

I've fed MTS snails to all my puffers I've ever kept since I've been keeping them ( a few years now) and have never had any trouble at all, and I believe in some cases it even helps to feed MTS snails.

Other people however, say it runs a risk of damaging puffer beaks, so the choice is really up to you. From my experience though, there isn't a whole lot of issue doing it.

mine arent normal puffers though, they are dwarfs, and i dont want to run the risk of them hurting themselves with the malasian snails

I throw a MTS in for my dwarf puffer once or twice a week and he is fine. Just sucks most of them out of the shell anyway. Good luck.

Drew

Edit: Just to add I do feed him more than once or twice a week

My DPs actually live with MTSs. Well, the MTS were already in the tank when they moved in. I have had my DPs for about a year and a half now and not really seen any problems so far. In fact, I find MTSs coexist quite well with DPs since they hide in the substrate most of the time unlike other snails which are likely to be exterminated in a short time. Ramshorn snails were gone in no time. I think it's really up to you.

DP's are among the puffers I have kept and fed MTS to.

Adult MTS are far to hard for puffers and have been known on sevral occasions to break puffers teeth. That is fact.
Smaller MTS snails have alot softer shells and can easily be crushed by larger puffers.

Dp's are far too small to really crunch MTS so do try to fish the snail from the shell. Dp's can and do suffer from teeth overgrowing.

The problems arise when feeding largish MTS (with harder shells) to medium size puffers. Large puffers will not bother with the relatively small adult snails. Species like the SAP and the irrubesco's etc (that size puffer) will have problems with large MTS.

Now to me MTS are a PITA in any tank and will quickly outcompete any other snail. That and the fact they do pose a risk to certain puffers that are attracted to fully grown MTS, why take the risk?

agreed

just got shut of about 40 of the trumpets from my little tank, im going to move all my common snails to a new tank so i can kill off the trumpets snails as they are of no use to me

I got rid of trumpet snails from one of my tanks about 6 months ago, and yet yesterday i found 2 more of the buggers!

That's part of my problem. I cannot help but feed them to my puffers, because they get everywhere.

i will be hand picking my common snails out of one tank, into another, and sending the rest of the tank including substrate down the khazi ensuring none survive
