I am so excited at the begining of june my bristlenose plecs which i had only had for 3 weeks laid eggs. I only saw one egg wiggling and mr bristlie was fanning the wrong spot on the lump of wood. I presumed that as the tank has 3 clown loach in it the rest had been eaten. The next day that was gone too. Then i went to pick a piece of mopani out of the tank a couple of weeks later and something moved near my finger, whoo hoo 2 babys seen about a centimeter and a half long.
Forward to Saturday just gone, I had left the piece of wood the right way up at the front of the tank so that i would have a good view if anything happened. When i looked in the tank friday lunch time mrs bristlenose's head was looking out of a hole in the wood and her mouth was going oooo. She looked weird and i though she was stuck. She then got out of the hole and mr bristlenose got in and did the same. I pulled a chair up to the tank and watched them for a while, they each went in about 6 times. Then she went off to the other end of the tank and he has been fanning the hole ever since.
I never expected them to breed in the first place and i am surprised to still see the babies from the first batch (saying that i have 4 female platties in the tank so that probably keeps the clown loach full). I have only seen 2 babies at the same time but the tank is heavily planted there could be loads more.
Next problem, i still haven't got the 4 footer set up which was to be a grow out tank. How on earth am i supposed to catch loads of babied in a tank which i cant touch the bottom of unless i stand on a chair up to my armpits in water. I was hoping they would wait before having more babies then i could just take the log an mr Bristlie out and put them in the other tank.
Oh well at least my LFS never has bristlenose plecs in so they will hopefully buy some from me.
p.s the male grew an inch in the short time i have had him he's around 4 inches and she is around 3 inches. Also his bristles have doubled in size, but i read that if there are loads of males in the tank the subdominant ones bristles will not get as long. Don't know if thats true but there were about 8 males in the tank when i got him. And hes grown since it's just him and his missis.
Sorry for the long post.
