Having a talk with two old guys last night and they kept mentioning Oolite (not sure if that is the correct spelling) and didn't want to show my ignorance but I really want to know what it is ?

They were using it to buffer the PH from what could gather rather than using out of bottle treatments etc.

So does anyone know what Oolite is ?

An Oolite (or an oolith or ooid) is a sphere typically consisting of several concentric layers of calcite or aragonite (forms of calcium carbonate) that was created by precipitation in the supersaturated warm waters of shallow tropical seas. The term may also be applied to an oolitic rock (a rock composed of many compressed oolites).

Thanks for that, but I don't see how it can help with PH, any input on that.

I mean I use something called Tufa to help with water hardness in my killi tanks, but what rock will effect PH, mine out of tap is around 6.5 and I have to use coral sand to buffer it up a bit, is oolite cheaper and more porous ?

as oolite is mostly calcium carbonate it will raise the pH.
