Only Room For 20 Gal

I have 2 fantails, they're around 1 yr old, in a 10 gallon. Currently I have room enough to set up a 20 gal tank to move them to without any trouble or significant expense etc ...how long do you think I could keep the 2 of them alone in 20 gallons?

How big do they have to get before I move them again? also I currently use an Aquaclear 10-30 gal filter, would you keep this or switch/add something else? Are there any other fish I could, would want to put in there with them?

I would upgrade the tank when they hit 6inches
