ok so I have a 20g with 3 Julii Cories, 5 gold barbs, 6 Raspora Espre, I want to get one more fish that would just be like a spotlight fish, I know he can't be very big and so I was thinking of getting a Dwarf Gourami, but from what I've read they like a more peaceful tank and with my cories swimming everywhere, my gold barbs chasing and nipping each other, and my rasporas constantly on the move, I believe my tank is the complete opposite of what the gourami would like, so my question is, what fish could I get for a show case fish? I want something with color that stands out a bit, can't be to big, but will enjoy being by him/herself. I'm at a lose really and am just thinking I'll give the Gourami a shot unless someone has a better suggestion for my one last fish. (after this tank will be well stocked :(, time to find room (and money) for another tank now).

ok went to the fish store today, I got a german blue ram, made sure I talked to the fish guys there (very nice store, knowlegable staff) we determined my ph was a bit high for the rams liking (7.2) but that since it was consistent and I have no other water parameter problems and I do 20% water changes every tuesday and thursday as it is already that it would be worth a good try, so my ram is in quarintine for the next week (or two we'll see how long I can wait) and then off he/she goes into the 20g. Glad that we think alike (didn't read these posts until after I got back home) definetly a beautiful fish, I hope that he lasts :).

Ok, I find Blue rams a bit harder to keep, although they are beautiful  Good luck

yes I have heard they are a bit harder to keep, but I'm a college kid that stays out of trouble (for the most part) and find myself in my dorm watching my fish, and checking parameters, and changing water, quite often, so I think I've got the matenience thing down, with 20-25% water changes on tuesdays and thursdays on my 20g display and then my 10g quarintine (running on a filter that's been cycled in the 20g for going on 3.5 months) gets a water change of about 10-15% daily when I get in new fish. So I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best because he is quite a lovely fish (now that I've got such a beautiful fish I may have to borrow a friends digi cam and take some pictures of him (and my tank and other fish too, because I love them too and love to show them off to anyone that's interested in seeing them)) once again crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

good choice

you mite want to get him/her a mate because they are much happier then and show alot of colour

hmmm thought about it but the 20g might then be a bit to full... Right now it has 5 gold barbs, 6 rasporas, 3 cory cats, and after quarantine 1 blue ram.... First I'm going to have to watch my barbs and make sure they don't get nippy with him/her, and even then I don't think I'll have room for another ram, so I'll have to wait until I upgrade tanks (which I will one day do after I get out of this dorm life and get an apartment) I'd like to move up to a 55g and move everyone from the 20g to there and then add some cories, another blue ram, and a school of pentezona barbs. but that's a whole other story that is still just a dream of the mind and paper.

alright after much searching and looking at my ram (laptop I can set right next to the tank for comparison) and I have determined that I do in fact have a male, he does seem to be quite the timid character (though he's very curious about my fingers next to the tank glass he'll swim right up to them and flaunt around in front of the glass) so will I be able to get him a mate? I told you in my previous post my tank size and contents and water change specs etc. If I can I'd like to go get the female today so that I can have them both from the same shipment of fish and also so that I can have them both quarintined at the same time. Any responses to this would be great.

well I went out and got her today (didn't want to wait any longer as I wanted to get a mate from the same shipment that the lfs got and good thing I went today as she was the last female) so they're both in quarantine and doing well, he let her know he was there when I first put her in but sense then they seem to be enjoying each others company swimming around with each other and sitting with each other (they do a lot of "sitting" but that's just cause they're new I'm sure) so I'm hoping for the best. If worse comes to worse I'll get another 10g and put them in there with a few other little fish (danios or some kind of tetra) can't wait to get pictures of these two.

Congratulations on your new Rams! I'm going to get some of those someday :)

You sound like me when I was living in the dorms...mostly stayed in my room (other than for meals and classes and such) and played with my fishtanks or on the computer :) My tanks got lots of water changes when I was in college (due in part to the tank cycling at the time).
