Could be fin rot, he could also have nipped at himself... what kind of plants do you have in, if any? plastic or silk? anything he can catch his fin on?

If it makes you feel any better, that is about 110% better than ANY of my bettas' tails look. I have come to the conclusion we have HORRIBLE water quality and all my boys' tails are curled, ripped and split. It's under control but none of them are perfect.

Anyway, if I had to guess, I'd say your boy has been dragging it on the gravel or it's from poor water quality.

How long are you going between water changes?

weekly 100% water change. nothing in the tank except water and fish.ive had him for about 2 mths.

I'm not the writer of this.

Most times this is a secondary infection. It can be caused by excess ammonia, nitrite, or a bacterial infection. If there is ammonia of more than 0, It's not fin rot...it's ammonia burn. Ammonia will burn a betta's fins off, if not kill the fish! I speak from experience! Ammonia burn doesn't begin to show itself for 4-7 days after the fish has been subjected to it. So, if you missed a water change and your fish's fins begin to melt/get ragged/get red edges after the water change, it could be the ammonia burn just now showing up.
:-(
This is basically a bacteria which attacks the delicate edges of a fish's fins and tail. It also causes holes and shredding. The fish's fins/tail will begin to disappear. May get gray edges. Good treatments: Clean water!!! Make sure ammonia/nitrite is 0. Do a 50% water change every other day, while treating with:
Kanacyn, Maracyn and Maracyn 2, Furan 2, Maroxy or Myacin.

i dont think its because of poor water quality because i just changed it on sunday(2days ago).

Red edging to the tail is septicemia, so i would treat with maracyn 2.

but ive taken water from my established tank(its clean, fishes are clean) to change it so...im sure its not ammonia.......

You don't need cycled tank water in a betta tank.

Just get fresh water from your tap...use Aquaclear water conditioner to take away any harmful additives from your water and add your betta.

Sorry - been away from this topic for a while, forgot to check it again!

I'd say it's a touch of finrot. Happens to everyone :)
I'd keep the water sparkly clean - I am RELIGIOUS about keeping my tanks clean, and they all still have problems. Sometimes it's from them dragging their tails across the bottom of the tank, sometimes it's just from what is in your water, and not by your own doing.

You shouldn't need to transfer any water from one tank to another, ever. The only thing that will benefit you to bring along is gravel - that is where the good bacteria lives.

If I were you now, I'd do pretty frequent water changes and toss a tiny pinch of salt in there. Keep a close eye on it, and if it continues to get worse you might want to consider treating it with something like maracyn or maracyn 2, as was mentioned.

I'd give it a couple of days to monitor first.

ya just cant clean a tank every 2 weeks with walmart fish  They die. I have to do it when it needs it and when nitrates are about 40. J/k i clean the tank everyother week, but its hard to with wm fish...
