I bought a small bit of duckweed for my two small betta tanks today and added it. I thought it would be good because my Betta and frogs would like it plus I can't have my lights on too much because my java fern and anubias get all brown if I do and I have to clean them.

In the past I have had slavinia nathans which I didn't likr the look of and amazon frogbit which I love. The frogbit just die off in my tank though and I am left with 3 small bts which are now slowly sprouting. I read duckweed is easy t grow so thought I'd get it. Now after reading loads of posts about it I'm regeretting it!!!

I just assumed it would take over the top and I'd net any excess each week and bin it. I've read posts saying it takes over everyhting and gets everywhere!!! Now I'm regretting getting it. Is it really such a bad plant to have?

Yea duckweed is a pain to get rid of, gets everywhere , sticks to the tank if the water lvl drops, covers your hands/arms when doing maint....

This :good:
Just remove 80% at your weekly water change to keep it in check

Its weird because i added some to mine and it all dissappeared, in the filter i think

If you want rid of it you'll have to net out every last bit. one single bit will reproduce and carry on spreading. I did this once and took forever.

so is this not good stuff to have? Are there any benefits to having it? I actually like the look of it. I could net it whenever to keep it in check

Only if you don't like it - As it has been said, when your water level drops it clings on...if it dries out it then welds it self to the glass...not unlike weetabix....
Look out for it blocking too much light for the other plants. if you like it, just net it :)

If you want to get totally rid of it, put a goldfish in there for about three days. It will be gone!

I leave just a few spots of it floating because its pretty, but I net it out whenever it's more then a few pieces.
