Poseidon (aka Bubble boy) my first betta (who has past on awhile back) was a vt I bought at a petsmart. He was large and obviously must have been over a year old and yet until the day he died he made many large bubble nests, despite never having any female betta around. I always loved his nests and I've never had another betta spend so much time creating and tending to such large bubble nests (mind you, that they were always empty). This was one that wasn't the largest, but one of the larger ones:

I was just looking at some old pictures and just got curious to see if anyone else had a similar experience.

I have one (a halfmoon boy) that makes one almost that size, but an inch high too  on a very regular basis.....(poor deprived boy)

No pics, but all of my VTs whom I've had for about a year make huge nests; 1/4 inch deep and the size of my spread hand! I guess they like the warm temps and big tank! :hyper:

My VT's don't like big tanks. I've put a couple in a 10g and all they did was sit in the corner, once they were moved into a 2.5g he was swimming around, making bubblenests 2, almost 3 inches thick. :S

Loki is around three years old and still makes a pretty large bubblenest the day after every single water change like clockwork. Old faithful, he is ;)

How come my bettas only make a bubble nest around the edges of the water and not like expand it and make it big. I mean even the one in the 2.5g doesn't make any bubble nest and the one in the 1g has started making them since I've upgraded his tank but the bubbles are only around the edges of the tank.

Bubbles tend to stick to the sides of the tank, and building the nest against a surface means it's protected from one side, which is why you almost always see nests on the sides of the tank.
