Hi guys
I recently purchased a 48g tank which had been used in an aquaruim shop as a tank with a sump. Consequently it had a hole in th left front corner. The shop owner kindly blocked the hole with a piece of glass but said she wasn't sure if it would be watertight. I have one third filled the tank and there are no leaks overnight. Would any of you risk filling it?

try filling it but if you can get some aqua sealant just in case, did they fill it by placing a square piece of glass on the inside and used sealant around the edges? if you have the circular hole at the back you can pack that full of sealant to be sure :)

this is what i would do :)

Thanks. Yes they've put a square piece of glass on the inside of the tank over the hole. So would you just fill the underside of the hole with aquarium sealant? I figure if I stand the tank on a polystyriene base it should stay put once filled with water. Goody, then I can run down my old and cracked 20g.

yes that should be enough to hold it :) i would defiantly put it on some carpet or polystyrene :) i have 330L and i was told if i did not have something soft under neath the bottom would crack at some point so ye defo :)

Ok I've emptied the tank and dried it out again as there was water slowly seeping through the hole. Have plugged the hole with sealant from underneath and put a layer of sealant right over the square of glass and joined into the sealed edges of the tank. Have also resealed the corners. Now to wait 24 hours.

I would be tempted to leave it a little longer than that.

A good rule of thumb is 24hrs for each cm of sealant

Ok thanks for that, better leave it a few days then.

kl nice one :) i do hope this will hold out for you, you got any pictures you can post up for us?

Top picture is of the whole tank, lower pic of my repair. Not much at the mo but I will try to post more pics if and when it is filled with water.

yep i can see that now very messy XD but i hope it still holds :) you managed to test it yet?

Yep it holds but I need to get a decent piece of wood and some polystyriene before filling it. Have got a sturdy desk for it to stand on but it's just short either end by about 4 inches. Got a week off now, phew!! Will try and set it up and get some pics.
