In a 4 Gal, you MIGHT want a small filter, but it's up to you.

I would also add some plants (probably silk, but you could get real if you really wanted to) and a cave or arch for them to play/hide in.

Then it will be a betta paradise!!! :D

Technically, you could now add a fish if the water is room temp without a heater, or up to the temperature it's supposed to be and stable if you do have a heater. :)

Bettas really do appreciate plants, though. Silk or live are best, depending on your lighting situation.

IMO, anything bigger then a 2.5 gal should have a filter and be cycled first. That's a lot of water to have to change out once a week. That's just my opinion. If you don't have a heater think about getting one as well as a thermometer so you can make sure the temp is staying steady. Your betta would definatly appreciate and benifit from a steady temp. Other then that everybody else said the rest of what I was going to. Good luck with your new boy/girl and welcome to the wonderfully addictive world of bettas!

would a sponge filter do? i have an old spare one.....it doesnt give out much current so the betta wouldnt mind it....but is it ok for a filter???
