i would like to use sand myself but i'm open to other suggestions if you got em, and if you can post the thinkness of your choice that would be great too.

Using a mixed substrate is something to be avoided in my experience; the coarser substrate will always end up covering the finer.

In my opinion sand is the way to go.

I use crushed coral in most of my tanks, 1-2". I wouldn't use it in a tank though unless the substrate is going to be overhauled regularly by the tank animals - it's prone to troubles otherwise. Sand is probably the better bet for most setups.
