so i go to the LFS again today to buy some sand for my new 55 gallon tank. i walk in and as soon as i say i am buying sand for my tank they all jump up and so no way you can have sand in a tank. they all say it is way to hard to keep your tank clean and that it is way too hard to keep your filter and cyphin clean. they say it wil clog my filter and i need to get gravel. is this true or can i use sand in my freshwater tank?

thanks, nate

The lfs eployees once again are misguiding people i see! :p

Ok, there is quite a debate over wether sand or gravel is better for your aquarium. It all depends on individual tastes and what the tanks inhabitants, including plants, will be.

But yes, the short answer is, YES, you can keep sand in your aquarium.

Ive never had troubles with a "blocing" filter from my sand. My eel prefers sand to gravel, and my FW plants grow better.

There is also a great pinned article i beleive, ill try hunt it down! :D

Edit: Yep, The_Wolf has made one here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=71597
