I did a pwc on my 10 gallon tank tonight which stays around 79-80 degrees F. Unplugged the heater while I did it-the water level never goes below the top so I don't worry about waiting for it to cool. When I plugged it back in, it didn't light up. The temp was about 1-2 degrees lower than normal. I kept watching and didn't see the heater come on so I turned it up to test it and it came on. So it works. I turned it back down to 79-80 and it went back off. I checked it every so often and the temp never came up and never noticed the heater light on. So I looked just now (about 6-7 hours after the pwc) and the light still was not on and the temp was down to 76. I had to turn the heater to 81 before the light would come on. Is it dying?

btw I've only had it since November or so. It was expensive (around $30 I think) and the idiot lfs worker told me I didn't need a thermometer since this heater will keep the tank at whatever temp I set it on (I use a thermometer anyway-obviously a good thing).

It does sound to me that the thermostat has gone wrong.
you say brought in nov, so it should still be under warrentee/gaurentee.
I'd return it to the shop for a replacement.

So far the temp is holding at 78-79. I mailed in the original receipt for a rebate (which I never got. dangit) and I do have a copy but the printing was so light to begin with it's really hard to read. I might try taking it back anyway but I don't want my fish to go that long without a heater (the shop is over an hour away, one way, so it would be over 2 hours and I hate to drive that far and not go clothes or scrapbook shopping  ) so I will probably buy another and when I exchange this one I'll keep it as a spare. God knows I need one with my luck. lol.
