I've read somewhere (i wish i could remember where..) that 1 gallon tanks/bowls you cant heat, that the heaters are too strong. I'm getting some 1 gallon tanks, and they have everything, filter, airstone, airpump, tubing.... but they dont have anything about temperature. I'm getting them for my bettas, and if i must (even if my parents said i couldnt... ) i will get a space heater to keep them heated... but i'd prefer to not get on my parents' bad sides TOO much, so yeah, is it possible to have a heater for a 1 gallon tank? like, one of those ones i saw in the sticky here > http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=107641&hl= or is that only 2-5 gallons like what i always see?

thanks a bunch!

Depending on the normal room temp in your house, you quite well won't need a heater. I have them in my 2.5 gallon tanks but they rarely come on. With the heat created by the filter (Whisper 10 inside the tank) and the lights, the temp in mine will stay around 76 or 77 all the time anyway even without the heater. I keep the normal house temp in the summer around 75 and in the winter around 72. I ran the first 2.5 gallon for 5 months without a heater and the fish were fine.

In answer to your question though, the biggest problem with heaters in small tanks is the risk of them hanging up and boiling the tank. If you put one in a one gallon, make sure it is a good brand (cheaper is not the way to go) and is no more than 20 watts (preferably 10 watts if you can find one). Most bettas will be fine in an unheated tank though as long as the house is kept at normal temperatures.

The ones they sell at walmart keep a 3 gallon at a steady 80 degrees, so a 1 gallon would probably get too hot with one of those...but, the ones in my post (the link) might work, since they have a thermostat on them (the ones from walmart just heat up and stay heating...no way to adjust it) where you could turn it to the lowest it will go and try it.

It wouldn't hurt to try it...just don't put a fish in there until you are sure it stays a steady temp. That Pet Place takes returns, so on the off chance it didn't work...you could return it.

You can also use a heating pad, but if you don't have to I wouldn't do that.

I'm not sure how much you are paying each for your 1 gallon setups....but you can buy the 3 gallon Kritter Keepers (I have a link somewhere I can find if you want it) for like $4.99ea (after adding shipping, they were like $7.50 each...still $5 cheaper then the LPS) and a 25w adjustable heater for $12 (or one of those from Walmart for $7).

You really don't *need* a filter on something that small...just changing the water every 10-14 days is suffcient, and uses less electricity and makes WCD a lot more simple to boot. (mine didn't like the UGF, and all those air bubbles that came with the aquaviews).

You can actually get a 10 gallon glass tank at Petsmart for $9.99. With a couple dividers, you could easily put 3 bettas in there and them still have plenty of swimming room.

You can get a 10 gallon tank for $10, then you pay $30 for the hood. :/

hahaha, what SRC said, rdd

but hte problem is my parents are kinda.... evil. haha, not really, but the temp in my house is ALWAYS freakin' freezing... Generally around 65.

But i noticed now that the light we have in it heats it up to 77! However, wouldnt that leave night to be VERY cold?? and a bit of a drastic change in temps?
