Well, it seems that I have lost my first fish. Spanky was my black tetra who died 3 days ago. It started with ich, then tail rot....then he just kept getting worse each day. I didn't get to go to the store in time to get him some medicine. I came home from work and saw him struggling to stay alive. :(

Well, after a little research I found a somewhat humane way to let him go. I took him in a cup of his own tank water...removed him from the tank. Slowly, I then added ice cubes until he finally just went to sleep. I hated to do it, but I would hate for him to suffer even more.

Bad part is.....my ghost knife has ich and tail rot now too. I have bought medicine, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I really seem to not have done a good job with this tank. If I lose all my fish, I'm going to empty the tank, clean everything out real good, and start from scratch. (cycle the tank properly this time). Any newbies out there (not that I'm NOT a newbie, but i'm speaking from experience).....don't do what I did and go out buying fish without cycling the tank. 1 or 2 platties to help cycle the tank is one thing...but don't go buy your full stock before all your readings go back down to zero.

Wish me luck everyone. I'm off to try to save my tank. I hope it all works out fine. I did, however, go out and do ONE thing right...I bought a hospital tank. (A little 10 gallon thing that fits right up underneath my 29 G) In the future, this will be used as a quaranting/hospital/breeding tank. Hell, maybe i will end up saving a few of my fish. It seems that, up to date, none of my other fish are developing symptoms...hopefully they wont. I am doing medication doses every day, maybe this is helping them prevent sickness. Well, hope you all have better luck than I am. Bye for now!!

Sorry to hear what's happened.

I don't mean to be nasty but I don't think freezing is the best way to euthanize. There is a pinned topic on it ion the beginners' forum. I don't really like to say, but it's just better you know IMO.

Most people think clove oil is best, can you imagine being frozen to death?

Damn stupid diseases....lost my second fish...although the rest seem to be fine. I lost my favorite one this time (my black ghost knife). Sadly, the petstore didn't have any more on stock. Probably best, though...maybe I should make sure my tank gets settled right before I decide to start replacing my fish. Well...I think one good thing came of this: my tank is finally cycling!!! Looked at the readings this morning, and my ammonia had dropped!! Nitrites are still zero, but I assume they will jump up in the next few days...then drop back down. Well, thx for reading...and I'm off to save my fishies!!!

Most cheap ICH meds kill's scaleless fish.

the best solution I think is to raise the temp to 30delC and add salt, works great

I dont know about the frog and salt, mabe move him the the hospital tank for now?
