Looking for help, did water change on my tank last night everything well. When up this morning went to feed fish(which all are fine).
But on top of the water it looks ike there has been a oil slick. Everything is cleaned out after each water change so not sure where this oil has come from. Checked all the water levels this morning and all are fine. How can I get rid of this?
Will my fish be ok? Please lend a hand! :D

it happens to my mates tank aswell but we dont know what that is. its like thin oil sheet on top ot the water init

could it be bogwood???

How does your friend remove it? Will my fish be okay? Looking to add two fish later on in week will they be ok being put into water? Will it not coat them in oil? All these questions sorry -_- just worried :/

Use kitchen paper float in on top of the tank, that should remove it

I think its from the food you feed them. I get the same substance and it only reappears after you feed the fish. I remove it by taking a dixie cup and slowly letting in water. Only the surface water falls in therefor takign away the oily substance.

I have had the same problem but have come to learn at least in my case that it was due to no bubbles or not enough bubbles in the tank. When I put my filter on the higher setting more bubbles came out and broke up the oily film and I haven't had a problem since.

The oil slick is proteins in the water usually caused by food (especially 'meaty' foods) or little water movement on the surface and, as mentioned, can be removed by paper towels, 'skimming' with a cup or by bubbles.
I have found the best way to combat it is to have a surface skimmer on my external filters intake (this sits just below the water level instead of near the bottom of the tank).

Its usually caused by oil in the food. How often do you feed your fish, three times like it says on the pack or just once a day? Once a day is better or very small amounts if you stick to the pack instructions but many people on here use once a day and some even every other day. Some fish food is almost 10% oil, check your pack ingredients.
