I added some salt to my tank last week to aid an ailing molly (died on Tuesday) and today, I found out that my albino plec (who I thought was an albino cory whoops) isnt compatible with salt in his home.

Oh god. What have I done to him??

He is however, fine. He hides a lot anyway, but hasnt appeared much since the salt was added. I am going to do a water change tonight..... but is the damage already done? If so - what have I done to him......

poor little thing.

Please help me......

oh, and does anyone have any piccies they could add of albino plecs, just so I can compare cos i am sure the shop said he was a cory when I bought him...........searching the net hasnt turned up anything of any use.

I honestly dont think it could have done that much harm..just change your water and keep an eye on him/her!

P.S. Just for the record had it been a Cory..you would still be in the same situation as they dont like salt in the water ;)

I know I am a total idiot........

it never even occurred to me that he might not like salt....

he is active during the day which is strange (I thought he would be nocturnal) and seems fairly happy in my little tank.... he was the one attacking the molly though..... but I suspect they were arguing over the treasure chest cos they both liked to hide in it, the plec won and the molly died.

:-(

For the record, he is a suckermouth fish (whatever type he may actually be) - but doesnt look like the photos of albino corys I found... so I rang the shop and the owner confirmed that its probably an albino plec for the price I paid (I think he was about £4 or £5). Says he will only grow to about 4 inches - but I am beginning to doubt whatever this shop owner tells me!

Well if he's a suckermouth fish he's definitely a plec. If he's a common he'll get to 24" but I suppose he *could* be a smaller type...might be hard to ID in an albino form. :/

I had a Pleco at one point and added salt to the tank, not knowing that Plecs don't like salt. He was fine. Just do a water change and keep an eye on him - I'd guess he'll be alright.

Go to www.planetcatfish.com You can find information on every type of catfish you knew existed and on hundreds you didn't know existed :)

Well I think he is a plec, rather than a cory - thanks Lizard for that link, very useful - I found a number of photos which look similar to my little friend.

I did a 20% water change last night and heh presto, he was out with the others having a ball this morning..... I have given him a bit of cucumber as a treat and to say sorry....

He is a much slimmer fish than most in the pictures on the site though. I guess he is still pretty much a baby! His colouring is paler too. (But, he could be annoyed at the salt!!!!)

Once again.....big thanks!
