Ive noticed this morning that my female odessa barb isnt looking too great. For the last few weeks she has been showing signs of spawning behaviour with the mail almost every day but i havent seen any eggs. Today her stomache and general shape is huge compared to what it was yesterday and she certainly isnt so active. Her scales are no longer flat and smooth, looking from behind her you can see them sticking out

Tank is 240L, well maintained, not over stocked. water levels are

PH - 7.9
Ammonia - 0.25
Nitrite - 0.25
Nitrate - 20

your water is terrible and she is showing signs of bacterial dropsy.
you need to do a large water change immediately followed by several small ones until the levels are
ammonia, nil
no2, nil

I suggest at least 50% now but no more than 75%
followed by 10-15% every day until done.

if you can get hold of it also add tetra safestart or bactinetts as this will speed up the breakdown of ammonia and no2,
both products should be placed in-between two layers of media in you Eheim.

do the water change now then go and get the above mentioned product

Edit
opps sorry ment to say on how to treat her.
a course of melafix should clear it, along with the water changes.
don't forget each water change will dilute the medication too.

i forgot to mention that the tank is still cycling, when i got it i wasnt told about cycling. this was three weeks ago and ive been cycling it since with the fish :(, the levels are checked twice a day and water changes every day to keep the ammonia and nitrite below 0.25

i have now done a 50% water change and treated the tank with waterlife myxazin for bacterial infections

I'm not sure what effects myxazin will have on your good bacteria, if any. (long time since I had any)
the water change was good but you could've said from the start that you were still cycling it.

I still say get some bactinetts or safestart, even more so now given the uncycled tank.

i know i should have said, sorry my mistake :(
ill pop to the lfs store tomorrow and get some bactinetts or safestart

just add my two cents worth

Myxazin, i've used it twice, the full course, never affected my ammonia, nitrite readongs (were still zero), i.e. didnt have a negative impact on filter

I had a Golden Barb with the same problem, but my water was good, no ammonia readings or nitrite and low nitrate. Took him out for 3 days, no food, he went back to normal size, not sure what happened? I did a thread on it, i've never seen it before, i could have sworn the fish was a "gonna"

Some peeps on here suggested it was a diet related issue, and him not eating for 2-3 days helped the problem, but we'll never know.

Hopefully the myxazin wont affect my cycle process then if you had no problems with it fry_lover

i know my ammonia and nitrite arent zero but they arent high at any point, i make sure of this and all the other fish are fine, my first thought was that she was egg bound as she has been showing spawning behaviour but no sign of any eggs in the 3 weeks ????

im laying off the food for a few days so fingers crossed she will be ok :)

Going to find a link to my Barb thread, i didnt have pics though

mine looks liked yours does, but i really think mine was even a touch bigger! It looked like it had been stuffed full of air!

I think it was three days i had it in a tiny tank with a mature filter. I didnt feed it, but that wasnt really the point, i took it out of the tank and wanted to see it's "death" just to see if any other symptoms come up, i know that sounds weird... anyway within 3 days it was back to normal, and its been fine ever since!!!!

the link just takes you back to the main page

unfortinately i only have one other tank and thats for breeding so dont want to put her in there

fingers crossed mine will recover as well, she's one of the first fish i bought

your discription sounds identical to the problems with my barb. head down tail up and looking more like a blown up puffer fish than a barb
