well , ive recently acquired a 20 litre tank ( on holidays ) so thats 5 u.s. gal ( me thinks ).
i think i will go for a dwarf puffer , however , i was thinking of a very small colony of n. multifasciatus?
does anyone know are they suited to a 5gallon tank? and any other interesting fih i could keep in there?
btw i have both a filter and heater for the tank :good:

Don't know much on these fish, but a search turned up this article on Tanganyikan Shell Dwellers advises a much much larger tank for n. multifasciatus;

http://www.fishtanksandponds.info/live-sto...ll-dwellers.htm

Hopefully someone will be able to shed more light on this situation, but my gut instinct right now says that a 5gal is not going to suffice unfortunately.

PFK uses them in a what to put in small tanks article , and in a PFK profile it quotes an 18" tank , mine being 15". so , as i was wondering , could i keep a SMALL colony? if not ill probably just go with the dp

id recomend a maybe a betta splendins, (as i have in my 5 gal) or a DP would be a cool idea too,
I`m not sure but bumble bee gobies may also fit in such a small tank.

How about a breeding pair of killies. I have a 5.5 gallon tank and I've got a male Fundulopanchax Gardneri Lafia and I'm looking to get a female or 2. You can go to the AKA website aka.org and look at different species.

a betta, everglades pygmy sunfish, Scoloplax empousa, trio of killifish, a red claw crab a dwarf puffer, Shrimp, snails, adf's, bumblebee goby, micro rasboras, pygmy cories, oil catfish, peacock gobies, white cheek gobies.

Any of them, there are more options, those are just a few :)

:good:

if you really want the multi's ask in the african cichlids section, they'll let you know the min size, i'm not 100% sure but i think it's too small, think 20g is more like the min size. see it's all well and good saying you'll just get a few, but not all fish like being kept in small groups so that might not be a wise option. :/

but yeah there's still loads of options

ok , thanks for the info.

i think ill either go for a dp , betta - or perhaps a red - claw crab , how common are they ? ( the crabs )

Red claw crabs are common by me also they are brackish and need access to land.

5 US gals is 23 litres, so your tank is under 5gals, really is far too small for n. multifasciatus.

I kept a trio of multis in a 15g. Seemed about the right size.

1 US Gallon = 3.785411784 litres

Therefore furry rabbit's tank is 20/3.785411784=5.28344 US gallons

5 US gallons = 18.927 litres

(I think you may be confusing US and UK gallons. 5 UK gallons would be 22.7 litres)

Furry Rabbit: Have a massive read around. I'm planning on making a rather small multi tank, but the tank I'm using does have a very very large footprint for its capacity. As long as you have good filtration (be careful about that with the sucking up of the babies etc), do regular water changes and there's a large amount of floorspace (which appears to be the main thing when keeping shell dwellers), then you should be okay. Just make sure you do get multis, as they are the smallest and best suited to being put together - other shell dwellers can be a bit violent, and keeping them in a rather cramped environment wouldn't be too good. Also, I'd only get 2 if I were you, to keep on the safe side.

Being such small fish, the reports of people keeping them in smaller tanks (as low as a 3 US gallon with 6 breeding multis in it) seem to be that it's possible, but harder due to the habit of smaller tanks to fluctuate their water conditions much more than larger tanks.

Having said that, I must say that that advice is merely from a few months of online research, and I've never actually kept them.
