Fish Herder
Might be hard to follow the first two paragraphs-LOL.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
note penned layed on chair- went to creek will be back soon.
tangled briars and limbs fallen on your path...stooping low. dang, rubs burning cheek-stupid limbs.
knees assaulted by stream gravel, talking to myself-coaxing fish into a bag.
Ahh- FFshiners and a Sunfish.Great catch.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wont it make the water cloudy?
Yeah so what?
Dont you want to SEE your fish?
Someday I suppose.
Thousands of wriggling worms slimy-all over my hands.
Slowly I let them fall into the corner- placed plants in the mire.
Water-murky and basically gross looking.
Fish-?
They couldnt care less- they are eating all the worms.
Day later- water has settled-plants have new shoots.
Why?
I added rich soil to the planting area.
Worms are breeding-making a constant supply of live foods for the darters.
Darters have darkened and are more vibriant.
Crayfish- they are picking up everything they can, eating like little pigs-lol.
Sunfish-totally oblivious to his surroundings-waiting to be hand fed!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the "condensed version".
Recapp-
Instead of using plain sand or gravel I have added layers of rich mire *soil*.
It not only feeds the plants making them grow lushly-but it also makes a great bed for bristle worms to live in.A constant supply of food for my darters, as well as other fish.
The crayfish have staked out their own territories and keep the sand stirred-releasing any built up gases. They also eat the discarded food stuff.Under one pump the smallest of the crayfish has dug small tunnels making it nearly impossible for me to "clean" his den. Thus far-there has been no problem with his "stored foods".
The only visible stress i have seen is with any new additions to the tank-they in turn calm down rather fast after seeing they arent being eaten. lol .
I have seen NO disease. Not even ICH.
If you want clear water all the time and still use the mire- just add sand over the mire.
Total number of fish in tank-10-and 3 crayfish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have used this method with various tropical fish as well.Works just as great.
If anyone would like more information, just send me a message/email.
Tank has been up and going for around a year.
So far so good.
